Container shipping costs from China have surged to their highest levels since 2022, contributing to rising inflation.

Since the start of 2024, shipping rates have more than tripled.

It now costs around $9,000 to ship a 40-foot container from Shanghai to New York and about $8,000 to Los Angeles.

This spike is due to a steep decline in Suez Canal traffic, disruptions at several Asian ports, and increased demand driven by inventory restocking.
